Why I admire him!!

A few days ago we were asked to prepare a talk about a thing, a feeling, a person or a subject that stands close to my heart. There was just one topic popping up all the time into my head. My father – the person I admire the most in this world.

My Achan (meaning father in Malayalam) is 50 now and is a central government employee and I truly adore him to the core. People say there are no such things as perfect. I do not know what others think.. But if a line de-markates the beginning of perfection, to me, my Achan is that somebody who stands closest to the it- both as a person and as a parent.

He has one of those rags to riches stories and it has been quite inspiring for me. He was a university rank holder as he did his post graduation in Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, Kerala, although he could rarely attend classes due to his demanding job which he had to take up to support his studies and family consisting of 4 other siblings.

Multi-talented Superdad – is a right description for him I guess. He is good at studies, sports, arts, carpentry, writing and almost everything that I can remember at this point. I have always been very proud of him and the fact that I was born to him. And I'm sure I'll continue to be.

To me, he is a man of a thousand ironies. The ironies that make me smile every time I reflect on them.

As a kid, Achan was always religious and used to argue with his atheist dad for the acceptance of the existence of god. He later went on to become a communist cum atheist who can give you enough and more convincing evidences on the non existence of such supreme super power.

After obtaining his degree in Economics from Deva Matha College, Pala, Kerala, he joined a seminary in Sikkim to be a priest where he practically played almost all the indoor and outdoor games for the following 2 years. He later dropped the idea, had an inter caste marriage with my mother and became our father instead.

My elder sibling is a girl and the day I was born, the Doctor asked my father whether he was sad about both his children being females. He answered in a question.. “Are you unhappy you are a girl?” The doctor shook her head and my dad was like “Then why should I be unhappy about my children?”

The next notable and funny thing about him is that for the first time when computers were introduced into offices in India he was one among the thousands who protested on the fear that computerization of offices might lead to unemployment of educated youth. But now he is like one of the craziest tech savvy people, utilizing possibly every part of the wonderful world of options and facilities like internet- banking, e-commerce, e-newspapers, etc on the web. He likes to remain updated about all the changes in the industry and asks us to do that even.

Another incident I remember about my father as narrated by my mother happened when I was admitted to the hospital when I was 7th grade. I lay shivering vigorously, without any consciousness in the ICU of one of the best hospitals in Kerala. 2 weeks and my disease was not yet diagnosed. The doctors tell my parents the filmy line they use when they cannot guarantee anything - “Pray to God!” Even then, unlike in most of the households it wasn't my dad consoling my weeping mom, it was just the opposite. And my atheist dad asks, “Why not me, God? You should take me if you wanna take one, not her.”

If I was to choose employees from all mankind for my future firm, I am ready to pay him all my capital to make him work for me. I've no words to describe how proud I feel when his colleagues calls him the best employee. Even watching him from home I've felt that he is that dream employee that every employer yearns for. One who is ready to sacrifice all his off days, devote his nights to learn deeply about what he has to do and whole heartedly attend all meetings and trainings and at the same time does all his duties as a family man without slightest fail.

As a lay human being, he never smokes, nor does he drink or bully. He has always been a perfect role model as to how to love ourself first. He exercises, briskly walks half a mile daily and despises junk food and meat. Why talk about junk food? He doesn't even like foods that are too spicy or oily. We always joke saying he'll be happy with just steamed vegetables and fish throughout the day!!

Both my parents work and my sister used to do her graduation someplace far from my home, so that meant I had to stay all alone at home for like half a day, daily. I usually got bored from watching TV all day long and used to hunt for books to read and keep myself busy. One such day I noticed an old, dusty brief case on the top shelf of the guest room cupboard. A curious me abruptly pulled it down and found inside at least a dozen note books. All of which belonged to my father when he was doing his graduation.

I know that reading other peoples' personal stuff is rude and against etiquette but at first I didn't know all those were something like his personal note books that belonged to him when he was in his twenties. If I had known I wouldn't have read it but now I'm thankful I did.

Some of it contained the top news and controversies of that period and his strong views about the topics. Some other contained some beautiful poems and articles or those incidents that happened to him when he was about my age. All that he had written were amazingly wonderful. I always knew that he had good command over English and literature but the depths of his articles made me adore him even more.

But what interested me most were all those letters he wrote in some of his diaries, written as if it was written to my mom. My friends always tease me telling I am not born for things like love and romance. May be they felt so because I did not just have a never-care attitude about their little teenage “love” stories but I also hated them. But now I think its because I have seen real love stories right in front of my eyes that run successfully even now. My mom and dad had a love marriage but that doesn't mean they always spend their days singing duets. They've had their fair share of hard times like any other couple. But the manner in which they come out of all their fights, together, is what I see as evidence for true love.

One of the most influential dialogues I've ever read or heard is from his diary. As I told earlier it was written as though addressed to my mother. It goes like this..

“Ani, I hate my parents. I hate them so much that I want to revenge them. Do you want to know what my revenge is? I'm going to love you as fiercely as my father hates my mother and I'm going to work hard and give my children all that I've missed in my childhood. This is going to be my revenge.”

After reading the diaries I had this deep doubt in me. This feeling of guilt about us being the obstacles of my father's growth. I had the feeling that we hindered his path to fame and name. As a writer or as a scholar. I wondered why he never tried Civil service for the second time or why he never published any of his articles unlike some of us who always get high with whatever junk we write.. But his books had answers for everything and even this. There was this part where he tells my mother that his motto in life is to have us, his kids and give them everything that we deserved and I can assure that he has given us much more.

My father is not just this. He is the one person in my life who is ready to forgive and forget all my faults and sins and see me as nothing, but his innocent little daughter. He is the one person who is ready to sacrifice his nights to do my class charts and diagrams and asks nothing in return. He is that one person who was ready to miss all his shots in a badminton game because I wanted to win. He is the one who sacrificed a promotion and a pay hike to be with me and the rest of the family. He is not just my dad, he is in fact my superdad!!

The Nobody’s Speech

What I may be saying
May come as a surprise
As it is unhabitual for me
To think beyond my lines.

But once and for all
I’ve decided to cross them
Move forward in my path
Face life, in all its wrath.

Amazing lines, people have already spoken
I don’t know whether there’s more to say or hear
Yet I feel unsatisfied , sort of irritated too
Having to keep back what that’s in my mind.
And how can I speak when no one listens?

Well I have things to tell you
Things like love and war and foul and fair.

Age does not matter, does it?
How many old, speak in sane?
They blabber and they mumble
And then jumble their words
To not let us know
That they’ve got nothing to say!

“What you need to fear is fear itself”
But the fear of fear is a fear in itself
Still, fear is just a hindrance
It does no good. Leave it behind.

Relations matter, sentiments too
But don’t let them chain you back
For regret that gets in
Does not leave you until death
After death?
Please don’t ask me. I do not know.

Love anybody, but selflessly
Ask nothing in return
For selfish love is not love
But just a form of barter.

Wars are boring.
We keep on repenting
But it keeps on repeating.
Throw off your weapons
Remember Brother,
You are better than just that!

But all these things, I say
Do they all matter anymore?
Listen if you want to,
Hear even if you don’t want to!

All that matters is just you and me
And the silence around us
Enjoy it!
It is invaluable.

Coming of Age

I cherish the call of a lovely September dream
In the quiet corridor of fun and fantasy, adventure and ecstasy
Fun withheld my entire being
Was calling out to me, luring me, tempting me.

Too careful I had lived all my life
Now it’s time to burst out of the pupa
Break free from the chains I had locked myself in
Break free from the cobwebs of memories and scary dreams
Break free from prejudices, judgements and the burden of cruel expectations.

Sun my wings, bake new hopes
And slowly fly away
To where I think I belong
To where I believe I belong.

The blue sky awaits me, but it’s new, there’s some fear for sure
Childhood crawls, but youth is short and old age is scary
Yet youth tempts, thrills and drags in
Like the flies around the flame
Or men around the bait.
The blue sky tempts, thrills and make me wish to be dragged in

When I fly away now, my childhood ends
But if I don’t, then my hopes end.

Persephone

Life of a plantlet
Begins as a sprout
Then carries the buds of the morrow.
Pampered by sunlight
Fed by the rain
It grows its claws deeper
And deeper over the days.

Yet a day comes
When it has to sleep off
A night that never ends.

My heart is cold
I taste the dark
I am the goddess of death.

I follow you closely
A step behind you
Impregnable to lazy eyes.
A breath behind the back of your neck
I never leave your side.

Flickering lights
The frozen wind
The clock is ticking away.
You cannot buy me
Or disguise your ageing self from me.
Unstoppable
Inevitable
One day it's all to end.

I cannot be hated
Or be stated
As I'm undefined.
I am beyond life,
Above all pain
I am the goddess of death.

Uncommon

My life is like a painting
So calm, but so same
I wonder if I’m common
But that sounds so lame

I see the girl flying in the movie
She saves the day
The pretty girl of sixteen
Out of the blue- she’s the super girl – the real one
So suddenly, she is one in a million.

What if I don’t have another side?
What if I won’t have another chance?
It’s odd to be flawed in the crowd of the flawless
But pointless that I care

Let those expectations just fly o'er my head
I’m gonna live my life care free
I’d rather be blind and not see the dangers
Than just sit around like the weak and the feeble.
Let’s not wait for some super girl to come save the day
Let’s make mistakes and learn it the hard way
Step out of the circle;
let’s start taking the untaken paths.

HITLER; THE ULTIMATE MONSTER OR MAY BE NOT!

Today I came to know a few things about the most dreaded figure in History. A person, whom I used to hate to the core, the person who has been said responsible for the resurrection of Germany but at the same time for the ill-fate of Jews and the person in whose hands was the sole power to determine the occurrence of the Second World War- the infamous Adolf Hitler.

I began taking interest in the once ‘Fuhrer of Germany’ and the reasons to The Second World War as I had to study a whole unit of my History Text Book of Class IX about Hitler and his mass Jew slaughter. But even then I did not get the interest or initiative to search and find a little more about the period. In Class X, I got a copy of the ‘Diary of a Young Girl’ by Anne Frank, one of the most well-known victims of Hitler’s cruelty. When I did a little research on Anne Frank, I caught notice of the Wikipedia page about Hitler. Hitler’s biography clearly explains the reason behind his Nazi involvement and Jew-hatred.

Hitler was born as the fourth of the six children of Alois Hitler and Clara Hitler. His father was an Austrian official. When he retired, he tried to settle down with farms and bee-keeping in which he failed and it may have happened that Alois used to unleash his anger due to despair on his family (Please, do note the words ‘may have’, I used).

Hitler used to be a normal, easy going, happy kiddo in his childhood. But with the death of his younger brother due to measles, he underwent a rapid transformation into a reserved, retired, withdrawn and exasperated boy.

Hitler was much dear to his mother but not to his father. There used to be clashes and fights in the house frequently between the father and the son. Hitler was ambitious and artistic and he wanted to study arts and become a painter. All these plans of him for his future were completely turned down by his father. He forcefully admitted Hitler to a technical school where naturally he lagged behind.

At that time, he began to be drawn increasingly into the political organisation of ‘Nationalist Socialism’ which he discovered as a hide-out from his father and an energy diverter. As a student, Hitler became more and more mischievous. Once, while hanging out with his friends, the thoughtless teenager got drunk and intoxicated. He tore his school certificate into four big pieces and used it in place of a toilet paper. These pieces were sent by somebody to the headmaster of the school who gave him bitterly embarrassing and cruel punishment and got him expelled. This in turn proved out to be the most painful experience of his life.

Hitler tried to get admission in The Vienna University of Arts but was rejected twice. Choosing architecture as the right path for him, he applied but he was asked for his school certificates, which he could never produce.

Rumour has it that at the age of 16, Hitler fell in love with a Jew lady called Stephy. He followed her for four years but never proposed to her. He got a chance to speak to her in a flower show but missed it. Later she got married to an Austrian soldier. If she had married Hitler, he had plans to live in Persia as a teacher. Hitler hated Austrians. Not only because his love was married to an Austrian but also because his father used to be an Austrian official and wanted him to be one too.

His father died at around this time and his mother some years later due to breast cancer. In his youth, Hitler joined Army and at the hard time of Germany, led it to prosperity.

Another thing said about Hitler was that he, as he wanted all Germans to be, was not a pure-blood after all. Only God knows if it is true. But people say that Hitler’s father Alois Hitler had been an illegitimate son of a German lady named Maria to a Jew, whose house keeper she had been. The inferiority complex that stirred in his mind because of this might have , along with the disappointment over his Jewish love and the Nazi belief that Jews were responsible for all the miseries, been the exclusive factors behind the development of such a strong feeling of hatred towards the Jews in his mind.

It can be observed through his secret proposal to the British Government in India that he shared the mindset of a serial killer which is a dreadful psychological condition. He proposed that if Gandhi and his followers were continuing to raise their voices for Independence, then they should eliminate Gandhi. If that was not enough, then all the political leaders. Still not enough, then two hundred other activists and then continue it till the Indian people gave up hopes for Independence. It is clear from the statement that Hitler’s ultimate and favourite answer for any question, however minute it may have been, was elimination.

Hitler cannot be called a monster or a malicious, pitiless person. His surroundings, circumstances, history and loneliness made him do all that. If for once, he had been well understood and led, Earth would have been different. The whole history will have been different. The lives of the million persons will have been different. At least, our Class IX History Text Book would have been different.

Autobiography of a candle flame

Life is short like a candle flame
Worthless if you don’t light it
Risk your life
Enlighten others’
Make your days meaningful.

Now that I’m a candle myself
Just a while left for me
Waiting my end
With eyes ajar,
I go on, like I’m lost in dark.

Far apart I see a light
But why am I so terrified?
May be because the blinding light
Will put me out of life.

I dread light
Unusual it is
Absurd it is
But I can’t help it.
An inborn human fright!!

The blinding light may be
The sparkling stars of heaven
Or could be the blazing pits of hell
Roasting hell, like hell.

Stand up now
Wait no more
Waste no more
The precious seconds
Left for me
I plead of thee
“Don’t make me die in vain”

The light is nearing
I can feel the quivering
Spreading across
My delicate body
Terrible thoughts
Attacking me
I plead of thee
“Don’t make me die in vain”

The light has come
Despite my fright
Putting my brief
Being to a halt.

I opened my eyes
And saw things I had
Looked through till then
But, never really saw.
Despite the storm
And the gloom,
I did my thing
I gave you light.
And I’m fulfilled,
And contended
For unlike you
I did my bit.

A Letter To The Distant Future.

Earth
8th April 2010

Dear “Friend from distant future”,

I am also starting to think that the world’s end is finally going to happen at 2012 (today its 9thApril , 2010). At least the Mayans and the movie say so!

The movie! You may not have seen the movie or even heard of it because Ilike to believe that you belong to the distant future. Because thereare a lot of things that I need to apologize for.

The movie I talked about earlier is ‘2012’ showing world’s end as the Mayan Calendar suggests. Even though, we survived many days prophesied earlier as “the day everything will end”, this time it’s different.

The Mayans are geniuses when it comes to Mathematics and Astronomy. They existed nearly 4500 years ago and most of the things they inscribed in their book have been proved true.

Eventhough the movie ends happily, I do not think it’s going to be that way here. Because as in the movie a lot of commoners are going to die and being one myself, I am nervous.

I am not Caesar! I am not Caesar to say that I do not fear death or that I pity people who are scared of death. Death can come all of a sudden and steal you away from this happening world even without your consent. And what if still during my death, I am no one to the world? My identity, my memories, my experiences, my knowledge, my words, my dreams, my desires… and everything is going to be wiped out completely, as if I never existed.

That sort of a death is terrifying. I would never want that. I say, before you die, you must do something like what eminent personalities like Mahatma Gandhi or Mother Teresa did, so that people miss you forever and hence, you stay immortal even after death.

So,what I wanted to tell you my friend from distant future is that “we are getting ready to suicide.” Yes. Even if the Earth won’t kill us by 2012, the world has decided to die. That is why, we are never concerned (any way, not by actions) about global warming, climate change, melting polar ice, rising sea levels, environmental pollution, ozone depletion, green house effect or any such ecological crises.

Through this letter, I want to apologize to you because the place where you now live may be unbearable and inhospitable and it may be slowly killing you all. It’s all because of us. Forgive us! your ancestors, for not handing over the land we inherited from our ancestors, the way it had been given to us.

And because we have decided to die, we are killing and destroying every single thing on our way, for we are jealous. Jealous, because when our reign of tyranny is over, the world will be happier and normal and much more beautiful and we being ‘typical human beings’ hate to even think of someone becoming happier than our self.

May be you won’t know, but in the forests (which I don’t know will survive our tyranny) there used to exist handsome creatures like lions, tigers, peacocks and many others. Creatures, so stunningly beautiful and powerful, that once you see it you won’t take your eyes off it.

But men killed it one by one to make its huge population shrink into isolated nuclear families. Men killed it for its skin, flesh, bones, teeth and every other possible thing.

Same was the fate with marine animals. You won’t know but even now in this 21st century when the whole population of men claim itself to be highly developed, in many countries of the world there still exist ‘coming of age ceremonies’ of men, who kill cute little creatures like Dolphins who do not know how to fight back to mark ‘their manhood’. In these ceremonies not just one or two creatures are killed every year but thousands in number. They, the dolphins, have always helped humans. Shipwrecked sailors, people etc were taken to shore by them. And these mass killings are man’s tribute to them?

Same way, do you know why sharks and whales are killed? For their blubber, skin, oil and flesh. These are used to make cosmetics, detergents etc. I do not know. Once they discover it, how can people use more of them. Terrible!

And when we see men cutting down forests and trees we get a feeling that trees are enemies that need to be eliminated. Else, it may prove fatal. And, what about the rivers and lakes? People dump waste into these as if they are huge waste bins, supplied to them by God along with 'The Bible'.

May be because we are dying in 2012 or in near future, some of the sharks and whales and trees and rivers and some animals might get saved and you may know about them. All I’ve got to say to you is, don’t do anything to them. I shall beg of thee on my knees, “SAVE THEM!” Don’t let your world be like that of us. May your world be an example of how Earth should be and Earthlings should be.

Okay. I am not going to bore you with any more of these. It’s only that my feelings right now are far more than what I can express through these words.
